Meet The Apprentices

We are proud to have four talented apprentices as part of our team, each bringing dedication, curiosity, and a growing wealth of skills that contribute to the quality and success of our projects.

 

ALFIE – Carpentry Apprentice, 1st Year

 

Alfie was inspired to join the trade through his stepdad, who is a carpenter. He has quickly found that his passion for the job drives his focus and dedication:

“I focus on particular tasks more so than I did at school because of my passion for the job.”

Alfie enjoys all aspects of the work and is relishing every opportunity to learn on site. He says the support from the team has been invaluable:

 

“All the team are always on hand and extra helpful.”

 

Looking ahead, Alfie is focused on completing his apprenticeship, becoming fully qualified, and developing his career with us.
In his spare time, Alfie enjoys playing football, pool, and darts, and loves heading out to watch the football whenever he can.

 

MAX – Carpentry Apprentice, 2nd Year

 

Max was drawn to carpentry after seeing the quality of work produced by our director, Mike Shuker. He appreciates the pride that comes from completing a project from start to finish:

 

“It’s work to be proud of when you see the finished product.”

 

Since joining us, Max has developed responsibility and independence, while also enjoying the camaraderie of the team. He notes:

“All the team help out and slow things down when something is being demonstrated.”

Max is committed to continuing his development and building a long-term career with Shukers.

Away from the site, Max is a professional Speedway and Grasstrack rider — and proudly holds the title of 2025 British Grasstrack Champion. When he’s not competing, he spends most of his time training in the gym.

 

LEO – Electrical Apprentice, 2nd Year

 

Leo’s interest in a trade was inspired by his dad’s carpentry background, but he chose electrical work for a new challenge. He has embraced the emphasis on safety and practical domestic skills:

 

“Safety first. I’ve learned a lot about domestic electrical work.”

 

He values the teamwork and support he receives on site, highlighting mentors Nigel, Ben, and Rob for their guidance. Leo sees his future growing as a skilled, confident electrician within our company.

Outside of work, Leo enjoys playing pool and socialising with friends. He’s also a keen motorsport enthusiast, having spent several years riding motocross bikes.

 

BEN – Electrical Apprentice, 4th Year

 

Ben’s journey began after Shuker worked on his own home, and Rob Parry noticed his interest in the trade. Over four years, he has gained extensive experience and confidence working across a wide range of electrical projects:

“College has taught me well, but nothing compares to working on site with the Shuker team.”

Ben has contributed to large projects such as the Guild Hall fit-out and Star Housing developments, where he’s taken on greater responsibility and often works independently. He values the continued support and engagement from both the team and Shrewsbury College, saying:

 

“The team are always supportive and keen to take an interest in how I’m getting on.”

 

Ben is looking forward to developing his career even further with Shuker Building & Development, continuing to grow his skills and experience within the electrical trade.

Ben is a keen football fan and recently bought a Land Rover 90, which he’s been restoring in his spare time. Something he says he’s been able to do thanks to the strong financial rewards of working for Shuker Building & Development.

 

Our Approach to Apprenticeships

Our apprenticeship programme, delivered in partnership with Shrewsbury College, combines practical on-site experience with classroom learning covering core construction skills, health and safety, building regulations, and modern techniques such as sustainable construction practices and digital measurement tools. Our experienced tradespeople mentor apprentices, providing supervised progression on real projects so they build technical competence, problem-solving ability, and professional standards.

Regular assessments with Shrewsbury College and internal reviews track progress, ensuring apprentices meet industry qualifications while developing teamwork, time management, and client-facing skills. We are committed to investing in their long-term careers, offering clear pathways to skilled roles, ongoing CPD, and a supportive workplace culture that values quality, safety, and innovation.

 

Shrewsbury College Partnership

Our partnership with Shrewsbury College has been instrumental in creating a high-quality apprenticeship experience. Jules Rhodes, Employer Partnerships Manager at the college, highlights the strength of this collaboration:

Through excellent communication, joint planning, and regular feedback, both organisations ensure that apprentices receive hands-on training aligned with industry standards.
